　　去年一項全國範圍內的調查發現﹐投資者預計未來10年美國股市的年平均回報率將達到13.7%。

　　理財通訊《內幕消息》(Inside Information)編輯韋雷什(Robert Veres)最近請他的訂戶估計未來扣除通脹、投資費用和稅收後的長期股市回報率(我稱之為“三淨”回報率)。數十位重要的投資顧問作了回覆。有人沒有剔除稅收因素﹐不過平均答案是6%﹐一部分人估計的回報率最高為9%。

　　我們都應該如此幸運。從過去來看﹐通脹率將年回報率吃掉了三個百分點。投資費用和稅收每一樣都將年回報率削減一到二個百分點。加在一起﹐這些成本將年回報率削減了五到七個百分點。

　　所以﹐為了讓客戶在剔除通貨膨脹、投資費用和稅收之後還能有6%的回報率﹐這些投資顧問怎麼也得挑選每年毛回報率在11%到13%的投資產品。他們將到哪裡去尋找這樣高的回報？據研究公司Ibbotson Associates的數據﹐自1926年以來﹐美國股市的年度平均回報率為9.8%﹐長期三淨回報率不足4%。

　　其他各種主要資產回報率更低。如果你像多數人一樣摻進一些債券和現金﹐那麼三淨回報率或許更加接近2%的水平。

　　執迷於不切實際的高額回報並不只是一種沒有害處的童話。它讓很多人存錢太少﹐以為市場會讓他們翻身﹔讓另一些人追逐不能夠持續的熱門股。帶著這種童話般的期盼﹐不管是你自己投資還是在投資顧問的幫助下投資﹐到頭來將是晚年生活捉襟見肘﹐並且還要多發揮幾年“餘熱”﹐而不是早早退休頤養天年。

　　就連投資巨頭們也都過於樂觀。基金公司Investment Fund for Foundations為700多家非盈利組織管理著80億美元的資金﹐其總裁薩利姆(David Salem)時不時請這些慈善機構的受托人和投資負責人來想像一下﹐如果他們可以把自己的全部資產換成一種合約﹐合約穩定提供未來50年的無風險回報﹐同時又滿足他們當下的支出需求﹐那麼對於這樣的合約﹐他們最低接受多少扣除通貨膨脹和各種費用後的回報率。

　　薩利姆的最新調查中﹐平均回答是7.4%。六分之一的參與者拒絕接受回報率低於10%的合約。

　　2007年秋季薩利姆對這群人展開第一輪調查的時候﹐有一個人要求獲得22%的回報率。按照這個回報率﹐10萬美元經過50年後將變成21億美元。

　　這位投資者是不是真的認為﹐他自己投資可以獲得22%的回報？顯然是的﹐要不然他會接受一份回報率更低的合約。

　　我問了幾位投資專家﹐如果把他們自己的資產拿出來換﹐他們會接受多少穩定的三淨回報率。投資咨詢公司Efficient Frontier Advisors的伯恩斯坦(William Bernstein)會接受4%的回報率。咨詢師、曾任福特基金會(Ford Foundation)投資研究負責人的西格爾(Laurence Siegel)：3%。共同基金公司Vanguard Group創始人博格(John C. Bogle)：2.5%。倫敦商學院(London Business School)的市場回報歷史研究專家迪姆森(Elroy Dimson)：0.5%。

　　薩利姆說﹐他自己願意按5%的回報率置換資產。我讓他看看華爾街有沒有人來證明他的判斷。對於一個由51%全球股票、26%債券、13%現金、 5%大宗商品和5%房地產組成的投資組合(跟薩利姆管理的資產很像)﹐一家主要投資銀行的機構交易室倒是願意拿出一個穩定回報率來互換﹐──扣除了投資費用和通貨膨脹後是1%。

　　這些情況對於認清現實是很有幫助的。如果你的投資顧問說他能夠給你每年掙到6%的三淨回報率﹐那麼你跟他說﹐你接受﹐並且馬上兌現。事實上你可以跟他說﹐你只要5%﹐剩下的留給他自己。作為交換﹐你把全部資產以當前市價賣給他。你提供給他的﹐其實在功能上就相當於華爾街所說的“總回報互換合約” (total-return swap)。

　　他可能會拒絕你發出的要約﹐除非他是一個傻瓜或騙子。如果夠坦誠﹐他就應該承認自己無法取得足夠的回報來履行合約。

　　所以要讓他講清楚﹐如果他真的需要對你執行一份總回報互換合約﹐他願意支付多高的回報率。你們倆在預估你的投資回報時﹐都應當用到這個數字。
